Jeff Bezos who is the CEO of Amazon has unveiled a plan on Thursday to counter climate change, by committing the company to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate 10 years before the scheduled time.
He has in addition pledged that the company’s emissions will be measured and the results will be reported regularly and will be implementing strategies for de-carbonization as well as change their business strategies in order to compensate for their remaining emissions.
The energy requirements of Amazon is expected by Bezos to come through sources of renewable by 2024, which is significantly more than the current rate of 40%, before it transitions into being emission free by 2030.
Bezos expects that the scope and scale if the company to lead the way. He added that what they know about their company Amazon is that being a role model in this kind of an initiative is very difficult because the company’s infrastructure is large in terms of physicality so by doing this they want to set an example that if they can anyone can.
Amazon, as a part of this announcement has agreed to buy 100,000 electric vans from Rivian which is a vehicle manufacturer.
Bezos has said that these electric vans will be playing on roads by the year 2021 and he has estimated that 100,000 vehicles will be operational by the year 2024. The move is building on the investment received by Rivian in February which was $700 million and was led by Amazon which was led by $440 million.
Amazon will be working with companies in their supply chain helping them to decarbonize and attain the goals which have been enlisted in the plan.
